Comment: In this table I have set out a run through the New Forest from Southampton to Bournemouth. Driver Holloway of Nine Elms was in charge of 34053, a modest load of 8 coaches - 270 tons - presented no particular challenge, however with switchback gradients and numerous speed restrictions, this route calls for enginemanship of a fairly high order. A 15mph Permanent Way restriction after Beaulieu Road cost 1½ minutes, but with speed culminating in a 78mph dash down Hinton Admiral bank, Bournemouth was reached well inside the 34 minute schedule.
